Well, this might be the ultimate party appetizer! This Pan-Fried Vegan Feta is so decadent, so indulgent and soooooo tasty! Vegan feta is dredged in panko breadcrumbs before being fried in a little oil. It is topped with chili onion crunch oil and served with toasted pita bread. I’m telling you…you NEED to try this!

What is Vegan Feta

I have to say I have never been a fan of vegan cheeses…until this Trader Joe’s vegan feta came along. I don’t know what Trader Joe’s did when they made this stuff, but it is something special. You can find it in their cheese section!

If you don’t have access to a Trader Joe’s, you could use another brand. I haven’t tried it with any other vegan feta, so I can’t speak to how it will turn out. But I imagine it will work fine!

How to Dredge the Vegan Feta

When it comes to frying, my number one tip is to dredge the vegan feta in aquafaba – aka the liquid from a can of chickpeas. It has the same texture as eggs and really helps keep the breadcrumbs in place.

Take the vegan feta block and dip it in the aquafaba – really coat it! Then, place the vegan feta in a bowl of panko breadcrumbs and press them in. You really want to press them on there – this will help them stay put when frying!

How to Make Pan-Fried Vegan Feta

Now, it is time to fry! Heat some neutral oil in a skillet over high heat. You want to make sure the oil is hot, but not smoking. Add the vegan feta and brown on both sides. Flipping/frying the vegan feta can be tricky, so here are some tips:

  • Try not to check the vegan feta for browning for at least 2 minutes – if you check it too soon the panko may fall off.
  • Use a thin spatula to flip – the thinner the better! This will help keep the coating on while flipping.
  • If you lose some breadcrumbs after flipping, no problem! Grab some more and press them in – give the vegan feta an extra flip to brown again.

How to Serve

Once both sides of the vegan feta are browned, remove it from the skillet and plate it. Top with chili onion crunch oil and serve with toasted pita. This can be served hot for a more melty texture, or at room temperature.

You can also serve this with a baguette, fresh veggies or even potato chips. I’m telling you, this is going to be your party trick to impress all of your friends. This stuff is GOOD!

Ingredients

  • 1 7-ounce block vegan feta I got mine at Trader Joe's
  • aquafaba liquid from a can of chickpeas
  • panko breadcrumbs
  • 3 tablespoons oil I used avocado
  • chili onion crunch oil I got mine at Trader Joe's
  • pita bread toasted, for serving

Equipment

Instructions

  • If the feta is in liquid, drain it and gently dry it off. Add the aquafaba to one bowl and the panko to another.
  • Dredge the feta block in the aquafaba and then the panko – be sure to really press the breadcrumbs into the feta.
  • Heat the oil in a skillet over high heat. As soon as the oil is hot (but not smoking), add the block of feta. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, until golden.* Lower the heat slightly if the oil starts to get too hot. Remove from the skillet and place on a plate.
  • Drizzle the feta with chili onion crunch oil and serve with toasted pita bread.
