I have been hinting at a slow cooker series on my Instagram for a couple weeks, and it is officially time to kick it off. And these Slow Cooker Vegan Steak Tacos are the best way to start this series. Vegan steak is tossed in a mix of dry seasonings, onion, garlic, orange juice & broth. Cooked in the crockpot for 3-6 hours until super tender and then loaded up in warm tortillas. This is the perfect weeknight dinner when it is super hot out or you just want to set it & forget it!

Step One: Prep the Vegan Steak

I recently invested in a new slow cooker and I love it so far! It is the perfect size and has just the basic slow cooker functions – high, low, cook time. I mean, you don’t really need more than that. But I had been using the slow cook function on my instant pot, and it just never worked the same as a good ol’ crockpot.

The first step for this recipe is prepping the vegan steak – which I used Beyond Meat for. It comes in the frozen section and the flavor is great! I used it in my Vegan Steak Salad also!

To the slow cooker, add the vegan steak, chopped onions, minced garlic, a handful of dry seasonings and a little oil. Toss with tongs until the “steak” is coated.

Pour in some broth & orange juice and gently press the “steak” into the liquid. Cover with the lid and cook on high for 3-4 hours or on low for 5-6 hours.

Step Two: Finish the Filling & Toppings

After the vegan steak is done cooking, remove the lid, add lime juice & cilantro and toss. Your house should be smelling amazing at this point.

Be sure to give it a taste and see if you need to add anything else – you may want more lime juice or more salt.

As for toppings, you have LOTS of options. Some of my faves are avocado, vegan yogurt, hot sauce, diced onion & cilantro!

Step Three: Assemble & Serve

Now that everything is ready to go, it is time to get the tortillas going. You can use corn or flour, just be sure to heat them up before serving – I like to do this over an open flame, but a skillet or the microwave work too!

Load up the tortillas with the vegan steak and any of your favorite toppings. And now, it is time to eat! These tacos are incredibly delicious, super easy to make and make the best leftovers!

The leftovers can be stored in a container in the fridge for 3-5 days. You can use the leftovers in salads, bowls and burritos!

Tips & Tricks

You don’t need to thaw the frozen vegan steak before adding it to the slow cooker.

When adding the cooked steak to the tacos, I like to let the excess liquid drip off so the tacos don’t get too soggy.

  • Add the vegan steak, onion, garlic, dry seasonings and oil to the slow cooker. Use tongs to toss until the seasonings coat the vegan steak.
  • Pour in the OJ & broth and gently press the vegan steak into the cooking liquid. Cover and place on high for 3 hours, or low for for 5-6 hours.
  • Remove the lid, add the lime juice & cilantro and toss. Taste and add salt if needed.
  • Heat the tortillas and layer each taco with vegan steak and any of the optional toppings.
