These Cheesy Vegan Swirl Buns are a dairy-free, comforting side dish that are perfect for the holidays! Cheesy, garlicky & delicious!

We’re still a couple months away from the holidays, but I already have them on my mind. And these Cheesy Vegan Swirl Buns are going to be the perfect addition to your holiday menu. They are simple – we are skipping making dough from scratch, because I have an easy swap – and they are super tasty!
Here’s what you need
Ingredients
- pre-made pizza dough
- flour – for rolling out the dough
- dairy-free Boursin
- shredded dairy-free mozzarella – I used Daiya
- fresh thyme
- vegan butter
- garlic salt
- dried basil
- onion powder
Equipment
- rolling pin
- 9×13 baking dish

Steps
Step 1: Prep the Dough
For this recipe we are keeping things simple and are not making the dough from scratch. You totally can, but I went the easy route, and used pre-made pizza dough.
You can find vegan-friendly pre-made pizza dough at just about any grocery store. Just be sure to check the ingredients!
Take the pizza dough out of the fridge and place on a flour-dusted surface for 30-60 minutes, or until it comes to room temperature.

Step 2: Prep the Roll
While the dough is resting, we can prep everything else.
The cheese filling is made up of dairy-free Boursin, vegan mozzarella and fresh thyme. You could play around with the filling – switching up the fresh herbs, adding some sun-dried tomatoes are even a smear of vegan pesto would all be great!

And to make this even tastier, we are also making a garlic herb butter that the buns will be topped with before baking!
Spread out some flour on a clean surface and roll out the dough into 10×15 rectangle. Add the cheese mixture to the dough and spread in an even layer.
Starting on one of the long ends, tightly roll up the dough into a log. Cut the log into 12 buns. Place the buns in the prepared baking dish and brush with the garlic butter. Place in the oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the dough is browned and the cheese is melted.

Step 3: Serve
When this comes out of the oven, the cheese should be gooey, the dough should be browned, and your kitchen should smell amazing!

I like to let the buns rest for about 5 minutes before serving. This will allow the vegan cheese to set before you break them apart.
You MUST add these to your holiday menu. They are sure to be a huge hit!

Tips & Tricks
If you can’t find dairy-free Boursin, I would sub vegan cream cheese. The Boursin does have garlic & herbs in it, so I would add 1/2 tsp garlic powder & 1/2 tsp dried basil to the cream cheese.
If you want to prep these ahead of time, you can place the unbaked buns in the baking dish, cover and keep in the fridge. Be sure to bring to room temperature before baking.

Great idea, I sort of freewheel it now with the filling based on what’s available and how lazy I am (e.g. using Italian seasoning mix and just putting it into the filling). I found some already herb infused pizza dough at TJs and that was also a game changer.
Mostly, for whatever reason, this opened my eyes to the idea of making whatever sort of swirl buns I want using store dough. I never made cinnamon rolls before because I’m generally too lazy/busy with kids to make dough from scratch. using store bought pizza dough to make apple pie rolls, orange rolls, pizza rolls, basically turning the concept into a leftovers vehicle to make quick sides/snacks. Thank you for the inspo!
Easy recipe to follow. I made homemade pizza dough and had to bake these about 32 minutes, I’m adjusting to high altitude baking, but these turned out great! Made our house smell amazing !! We had these with broccoli and vegan Parmesan garlic gnocchi.
