These Blackened Tofu Tacos are layered with crispy tofu, shredded cabbage, avocado and a creamy vegan sauce.

These Blackened Tofu Tacos are a close dupe for fish tacos without having to use a fake vegan “fish” product. Instead we are dredging tofu slices in blackened seasoning before frying them in a little oil. The tofu is layered on corn tortillas with shredded cabbage, avocado and a tangy cream sauce. Simple & easy vegan tacos!
Step One: Make the Tofu
I used pre-made blackened seasoning for this recipe. It is super easy to purchase online. But if you want to make it from scratch, see the recipe notes!

To make the tofu, cut a block of tofu into 16 sticks. Add some blackened seasoning to a shallow bowl. Dredge the tofu in the seasoning and place on a plate.
Heat some neutral oil in a skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the tofu and cook until browned, flip and brown the other side (approx. 3 minutes per side). Remove from the skillet and place on a paper towel lined plate to remove the excess oil.

Step Two: Sauce it Up
While the tofu is cooking, prep a delicious creamy sauce. It just requires a few ingredients:
- vegan mayo
- vegan yogurt – unsweetened
- blackened seasoning
- lime juice
Add all of the sauce ingredients to a bowl and mix to combine. Taste and adjust the seasonings as needed. Set aside.

Step Three: Assemble & Serve
Now that everything is ready to go, it is time to assemble. Start by heating the tortillas – either over an open flame or in a skillet.

To each tortilla add some avocado slices, shredded cabbage and tofu slices. Drizzle on some of the creamy sauce and serve with extra lime wedges on the side.
These tacos are quick, easy and packed with plant protein. Perfect for taco night at home!

Tips & Tricks
Some of the blackened seasoning will come off while frying. This is ok and will keep the tofu from being too salty. If you plan to cook the tofu a different way (oven or air fryer) then I would use less blackened seasoning and just sprinkle it on the tofu.
If you are sensitive to salt I would make the blackened seasoning from scratch. Store-bought blackened seasoning can be extra salty.
If you want to make the blackened seasoning from scratch: combine 2 tablespoons smoked paprika, 1 tablespoon cayenne powder, 1 tablespoon onion powder, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon ground black pepper, 1 teaspoon sea salt, ½ teaspoon dried basil, ½ teaspoon dried oregano, ½ teaspoon dried thyme.

Loved. Also want to mention we switch it up sometimes and use your cilantro ranch recipe with this instead of the posted sauce. Really good!
Loving these! I’ve tried making the tofu both ways, air fried and in the skillet. I normally do most of my tofu in the air fryer so I tried this way first, but the blackened seasoning flavor comes together so much better in skillet. Super easy recipe that is both fulling and delicious. Will definitely be making again!!
Also, I didn’t find anything too salty, but I also made the blackened seasoning myself from the recipe given and have never tried store bought. Would recommend!
Thank you for sharing the recipe for homemade blackened seasoning! That is so appreciated ☺️
The tacos sound delicious and we be making them soon.
Hope you love them!!
^don’t know if my rating posted!
We thoroughly enjoyed this!! Had no issues with the salt and loved the spice. I didn’t have tortillas so we actually ate this bowl style over brown rice – fabulous. Thanks for another spectacular recipe!
Thanks so much Lauren! Love the idea of making these into bowls!
I was super excited about this but it turned out really bland…which is weird considering how much seasoning is on the tofu. I might try it again with coleslaw instead of plain cabbage and with a different sauce, but as written, it fell a little flat.
We’ll go back to the bang bang tofu tacos next week, which are amazing 🙂
So sorry it didn’t work out for you – but I love the bang bang tacos too 😉
This was a delicious and easy weeknight meal. I opted to use your notes for the blackened spice as my partner and I have a low tolerance for heat and it turned out so well! I didn’t find it salty at all. This will definitely be another of yours that goes in the rotation
Thanks so much Katherine! So glad you both liked it!
I think this has potential but I wish I would have used way less of the seasoning it was too salty and my husband couldn’t even eat it. ☹️
So sorry it didn’t work out for you!
