Need some extra spice in your life? This Spicy Habanero Salsa is the perfect snack with lots of spice and flavor - Super Bowl party favorite!
We are less than 2 weeks away from the Super Bowl. You know that that means? Lots of yummy snacks are coming your way.
And we're kicking it off (see my pun skills ?) with this Spicy Habanero Salsa.
If you've never dabbled with habanero peppers, they are these little orange guys that pack a punch. The kind of heat that lingers on the tongue - but in a good way.
I love a spicy salsa and making it fresh at home is always a good idea.
I recommend starting with 1 habanero and then increasing the heat from there. Peppers can vary in spice - so you may get one that is a dud and another that is spicy as hell. So add carefully.
Oh, and did I mention, there are also jalapenos in this salsa? I like having both since I think they bring different qualities to the table. Jalapeno has spice, but also a nice flavor. Habanero doesn't have as much flavor, but really ups the spice level.
I swear, you will be addicted!

Love this recipe so much and it’s in our weekly rotation now. Thank you!!!
Rene
That's amazing!! So glad you liked it!
Chris
Great recipe, but I highly recommend adding vinegar. Tasted a bit bland without it, spice notwithstanding.
Jeremy
Absolutely needs vinegar. I just made this and added a bunch to lift the flavor up.
Edward
Lost me at can of diced tomatoes
Lori
Ice and easy recipe and like any recipe it can be adjusted for spice and flavor after the first try. Question, have you ever canned this? I have a lot of habaneros to use up, thanks.
Rene
I am no canning expert - so I can't speak to that lol But you should definitely be able to freeze it!
Jomas
It was good. The first time I made it I used 10 jalapeños and habaneros, then bumped it up to 15 the following time. Still want more heat to the next time I make it I’m going to 20.
Rene
Whoa Jomas - that is my kind of spicy! Beast mode!
BillC
Or you could toss in a couple Trinidad scorpion, Carolina reapers, or ghost peppers to seriously kick up the heat!
Nick
Hi Rene, question, do you leave the seeds in the peppers or remove them? thanks in advance
Rene
Hi Nick - If you like spice, leave them in. If you want it a little milder, you can remove the seeds!
Justin
Outstanding! I added five habaneros! Put two packets of Stevia in there as well to give it a tiny bit of sweetness. Oh my goodness I am sweating as I type this but it’s a good sweat!
Rene
Hi Justin - 5 habaneros?!? Now that's what I'm talking about! So glad you enjoyed!
Rob
Great simple recipe. Used tomatos, jalapenos, and habaneros from our garden. It is hot, but tasty! Next time I may remove the seeds so I have some help eating it.
Rene
Hi Rob - So glad you liked it! And why share??? 😂
Greg
I love this salsa! Great on food, heals open wounds, and enables me to jump over tall buildings. How long will this keep in the refrigerator?
Rene
Hahaha - so many uses! It should last 3-5 days.
Haley
Peel by broiling or another Way ?
Rene
I think the easiest way is to boil them for 1 minute then put them in an ice bath for 2 minutes. The skins should split and they should be easy to peel 👍
Haley
How many fresh tomatoes would I use n do they need peeled ?
Rene
Well 28oz is 3.5 cups - so just measure your fresh tomatoes out in cups. And yes, I would peel them 👍
Andrew
Outstanding recipe!!! I made with fresh tomatoes and is a nice spicy treat - thank you!!!
Rene
Yum! Fresh tomatoes will definitely take this to the next level! So glad you liked it.
Lindsay
So good, the perfect amount of spicy and flavor! All the guest I had over preferred this over my mild salsa!
Rene
Yay! So glad it was a hit!
Melissa
I'm wondering if it's possible to use fresh tomatoes instead of canned? I feel like fresh usually taste a bit better!
Rene
You can totally use fresh! Go for it! 🙂
Linnea
How long will it last in the fridge?
Rene
A few days for sure - the only thing that will really "turn" is the cilantro.
Rod
This is a great and simple recipe. I used one habanero from my garden and one fairly large jalapeño. Perfect amount of spice. The next time I make it I’ll cut back slightly on the garlic powder because a little garlic goes a long way for me but that’s just my taste.
Rene
I can never have enough garlic. lol. Love that you used habaneros from your garden!
Gail Brienza
How would this change in order to can it?
jack
add some vinegar or lemon juice to get the ph around 4.0
Barbara
How much vinegar and lemon juice
Rene
Hmmmmm...neither of those ingredients are in this recipe.
Barbara
Looks at Jack’s comment. He mention lemon juice and vinegar. So I asked the question how much vinegar and Lemmon juice
brooke
I used 4 habanero and 4 jalapeños much better.

Love adding spice to a salsa, the spicier the better for me. Homemade salsa is my favorite. Thanks for sharing
Rene
You're one after my own heart...bring on the spice 🙂
Pam Hanson
Do you cook or heat the chili's first or just cut them up and put in the blender? I'm new to this
Rene
Just cut them up in the blender!
